DDF sales surge 19 per cent to Dh2.1billion in 2005

DUBAI — Dubai Duty Free has announced record annual retail sales of over Dh2.1 billion (US$590 million) for 2005, a 19 per cent increase over the previous year.

Commenting on the year-end figures, Shaikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, president of the Department of Civil Aviation, Dubai said: "It has been another remarkable year for Dubai Duty Free, which has retained its position as the third largest airport retailer in the world in terms of turnover."

The last month of the year provided the operation with some new sales statistics, when daily sales on the 20th December, Dubai Duty Free's 22nd Anniversary, soared to Dh17.7 million ($4.9 million). The month of December also set a new monthly record with sales topping Dh219 million ($60 million). Colm McLoughlin, managing director of Dubai Duty Free, said: "2005 was a fantastic year and one that saw a number of renovations and additions to the retail operation, including the opening of a new 650 square meter Arrivals Duty Free and a new pharmacy."

In 2005 the total number of sales transactions was close to 13 million, which represents an average of 35,600 sales transactions undertaken every 24 hours, 365 days of the year.

Individual categories, which showed exceptional growth in 2005, include liquor, which rose by 25 per cent, perfumes, which grew by 29 per cent, men’s, fashion, which grew by 85 per cent and gifts from Dubai, which was up 52 per cent.

The Arrivals Duty Free sales grew by 20 per cent and this category now accounts for eight per cent of total sales.

In the past year, Dubai Duty Free was the recipient of the Business Traveler UK award for 'Best Duty Free Shopping' in September last year as well as winning the Middle East counterpart of the same award in May 2005
