Dubai Duty Free tops global rankings

UAE. Dubai Duty Free ranks as the biggest single airport retail operation in the world according to industry experts Generation Research, the publishers of Best & Most and other Travel Retail reports.
Dubai Dubai Free has recorded sales of US$1.1 billion in 2008, placing it ahead of London Heathrow and Seoul Incheon International Airport which both exceeded the US$1 billion sales mark.
The global duty free and travel retail indutry recorded sales of US$37 billion in 2008, an increase of 8.8% over the previous year, of which airport duty free sales accounted for US$21.8 billion, Swedenbased Generation said.
With sales of US$1.1 billion in 2008, Dubai Duty Free accounted for 5% of the airport duty free business and 3% of the wider duty free and travel retail global business.
Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, president of Dubai Civil Aviation Authority and chairman of Dubai Airports, said: “For the past several years Dubai Duty Free has been listed amongst the top three airport retailers in the world in terms of sales. Therefore it is a great achievement to be placed at the top.”
Dubai International Airport last month announced double-digit growth year-on-year in passenger trafficfor the month of June.
Passenger traffic at the airport jumped 10.3% to 3.36 million in June at the three terminals handled by the company.
Colm McLoughlin, managing director of Dubai Duty Free said: “We are obviously delighted to achieve the number one spot based on our sales of $1.1bn.”
The retail operation now covers 15,000 square metres and has 3,500 members of staff.
